Pregnancy & Post Partum
At Hume Osteo, we are passionate about assisting you throughout your pregnancy from first to third trimester as well as helping you prepare for your birth and through the post partum period.
How Can We Help Through Your Pregnancy?
Pregnancy is a transformative journey resulting in considerable hormonal, biomechanical and vascular changes impacting all systems, including the musculoskeletal system. Your body will undergo major changes in a relatively short period of time. To adapt to changes, your body releases a hormone called relaxin. This allows the ligaments throughout your body to soften and stretch, helping your posture to adapt as your baby grows.
Our osteopaths aim to support previous injuries, postural changes, and areas of restriction and laxity can all contribute to discomfort/pain during pregnancy. We can address a range of issues, including:
- Low back/ pelvic pain
- Sacroiliac joint pain
- Sciatica symptoms
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Rib pain
- Pelvic instability
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Headaches
- Pelvic floor dysfunction
- Pelvic floor assessment/ treatment
- Preparing pelvic floor for birth
Birth Preparation
Our osteopaths, Esra and Sezen, have completed further studies to assist you with birth preparation. They will work on making sure the ligaments and fascia that influence your uterus and pelvis are working and moving optimally with the intention of creating space within your pelvis giving your baby the room to move freely into your pelvis.
Treatment may include:
- Hands on treatment – soft tissue, manipulation, articulation of the pelvic joint etc
- Internal and external pelvic floor assessment/ treatment
- Internal myofascial release to help with birth preparation, pelvic/hip/back pain
- Pregnancy and prolapse assessment
- Spinning babies
- Pregnancy exercise programming
- Pregnancy Clinical Pilates
- Perineal massage
- Active birth positions
- Tips for minimising perineal tearing
- Labour breathing techniques
- Optional to bring birthing partner into sessions as well
Post Partum
We aim to assist in rebalancing the post-partum body through osteopathy. Yes, we know labour is a natural process, but it is physically demanding on the mother’s body. The position of the pelvis and sacrum is easily altered during childbirth because the ligaments of the pelvis are in such a relaxed state.
It is common for new mums to experience the following pains postpartum:
- Lower back and pelvis pain
- Pelvic girdle and pubic symphysis pain
- Mid back pain during and after breastfeeding
- Wrist pain/ Carpal tunnel
- Neck pain and headaches.
Osteopathic treatment post birth can help resolve any strains present, relieving pain and discomfort and helping to prevent any long-term issues.
